Chapter 8 - The Coastal Haven

|

The Blackwood coastal estate stood majestically on the edge of a rocky cliff overlooking the roaring Atlantic Ocean.

Far away from the prying eyes of the city press and the suffocating corporate politics, the air here smelled of salt and wild pine.

Emma stood on the wraparound veranda, wrapping her woolen shawl tightly around her shoulders as the evening breeze ruffled her hair.

The ocean waves crashed violently against the jagged rocks below, mirroring the turmoil that still churned within her heart.

She had agreed to stay with Adrian for forty-eight hours under protective custody, but their relationship remained suspended in fragile uncertainty.

The sound of steady footsteps approached behind her, and she did not need to turn around to know it was Adrian.

He stepped beside her at the wooden railing, holding two steaming ceramic mugs filled with freshly brewed peppermint tea.

"You always used to make this for me when the thunderstorms kept me awake," Adrian said softly, handing her one of the mugs.

Emma took the warm cup, her fingers brushing against his, sending a familiar spark through her veins that she tried desperately to ignore.

"That was when I thought you were in excruciating pain, Mr. Blackwood," she answered, taking a slow sip.

"Adrian," he corrected her firmly, turning his body toward her so he could study the delicate contours of her profile.

"Emma, I need you to understand something about the last seven months of my life."

He reached down and unbuttoned the top three buttons of his charcoal shirt, pulling the fabric aside without shame.

Emma gasped softly, her breath catching as she saw the long, jagged pink scars running across his collarbone and chest.

"The accident was not faked," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a solemn, reflective cadence.

"My car rolled four times down a sixty-foot ravine, and I spent three weeks in an induced coma while my bones were pieced back together."

Emma reached out instinctively, her gentle fingertips tracing the edge of the deepest scar before she could stop herself.

Adrian closed his eyes at her touch, letting out a ragged sigh that sounded like a man finding water in an endless desert.

"When I woke up, the doctors told me I would likely never stand again, and Julian was already dividing my empire among his cronies."

He looked down into Emma's wide, compassionate eyes, his gaze locking with hers in an unbreakable embrace.

"I wanted to die, Emma; I honestly lay in that hospital bed wishing the car had finished the job completely."

"Adrian, don't say that," she whispered, her heart aching for the unbearable torment he had endured in silence.

"It was the truth until the morning you walked into my room with that ridiculous floral clipboard and refused to let me surrender," he continued.

A small, genuine smile touched his lips for the first time in days, softening the harsh, aristocratic lines of his handsome face.

"You treated me like a human being when the entire world treated me like a broken relic or an inconvenient obstacle."

He reached up and gently tucked a stray lock of brown hair behind her ear, his thumb brushing her cheekbone with infinite tenderness.

"I started fighting to walk again because I wanted to be worthy of standing beside you as an equal, not as a burden."

Emma felt a warm tear slide down her cheek, and this time, she did not wipe it away.
