Chapter 12 - Cornered and Dangerous

|

The ballroom erupted into absolute chaos as the undeniable footage of Vanessa's attempted murder looped on the giant screens.

Socialites pulled away from the mezzanine staircase as if Vanessa were infected with a deadly plague, leaving her completely isolated.

Two uniformed security guards rushed up the carpeted stairs to restrain her, but Vanessa broke down into hysterical, weeping apologies that fell on deaf ears.

In the center of the ballroom floor, Adrian turned toward Emma, offering her a look of profound vindication and gentle triumph.

"It's over, Emma; the entire world knows the truth about who you are and what she did," Adrian whispered, squeezing her fingers.

"Not yet, Adrian," Emma said quietly, her sharp eyes scanning the panicked crowd near the emergency exits.

"Julian isn't here; he would never let Vanessa take the fall alone while he simply walked away."

Suddenly, the emergency lights flickered, and the entire ballroom plunged into pitch-black darkness as the main power grid was cut.

Screams of terror echoed off the high ceilings as five hundred wealthy patrons scrambled blindly for the exits in absolute pandemonium.

Adrian moved instantly, wrapping his strong arm around Emma's waist to shield her from the surging, panicked crowd.

"Marcus! Perimeter breach! Secure the exits now!" Adrian barked into his concealed earpiece over the deafening noise.

Before Marcus could respond, a sudden explosion of sparks erupted near the service hallway as someone jammed the secondary breaker box.

In the chaotic darkness, a heavy hand grabbed Emma's bare shoulder from behind with bruising force, ripping her away from Adrian's grip.

Emma cried out in surprise as she was dragged violently backward into the shadows of the private service corridor behind the stage.

"Shut your mouth or you die right here, little nurse," Julian's hoarse, manic voice snarled directly against her ear.

He smelled of stale sweat and gasoline, his fingers digging painfully into her arm as he dragged her down the dimly lit hallway.

In his right hand, Julian gripped a small black automatic pistol, its metallic slide glinting under the dim red emergency exit signs.

"Adrian!" Emma screamed with all the strength in her lungs, refusing to go quietly into the dark.

"Adrian is too late, you little parasite!" Julian spat, dragging her toward the underground service elevator that led to the loading docks.

"He took my company, he took my money, and he turned the whole city against me!"

Julian slammed Emma against the heavy steel elevator door, pressing the cold barrel of the gun against the side of her neck.

"Now he is going to watch me take the only thing in this miserable world that he actually cares about."

Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the end of the service corridor were kicked off their hinges with a bone-shattering crash.

Adrian emerged from the dust and flashing red emergency strobe lights, moving toward them with the unstoppable fury of a vengeful god.

His eyes burned with a terrifying, lethal rage that made Julian's trembling hand shake even more violently against Emma's skin.

"Let her go, Julian," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper that cut straight through the wailing sirens.

"Or I swear to God, you will not leave this basement breathing."
