Chapter 3 - The Secret in the Shadows

The tension in the foyer was so thick that even the servants hiding in the corridors held their breath.
Julian tried desperately to regain his arrogant posture, smoothing down the lapels of his expensive Italian jacket.
"Adrian, this is wonderful news, truly a miracle from heaven," Julian lied, forcing a strained, pathetic smile.
"The family has been praying day and night for your full recovery, and now look at you."
Adrian did not smile back; instead, his gaze cut through his cousin like a surgical scalpel.
"Save your prayers for your defense attorneys, Julian, because you are going to need every single one of them."
Vanessa suddenly stepped between the two men, her panic transforming into venomous fury.
"You think you've won just because you can walk across a room?" she hissed, dropping all pretense of gentleness.
"You're bankrupt, Adrian, and your father's board voted to strip you of your executive authority last Friday."
"They voted based on fraudulent medical reports that you and Julian submitted behind my back," Adrian said calmly.
He reached into his inner suit pocket and pulled out a sleek silver flash drive.
"Every altered email, every wire transfer to the hitman's offshore account, and every conversation you had in my study is on this drive."
Julian's eyes widened with sheer horror as he recognized the customized encrypted hardware.
"You were bugging your own house?" Julian whispered, his hands beginning to shake uncontrollably.
"I was bugging the snakes who thought I was too broken to defend my territory," Adrian answered.
Emma stood a few feet away, watching the three of them tear into each other with cold corporate fury.
She felt completely invisible, like a ghost trapped inside a nightmare that was never meant for her.
Seven months of her life had been poured into preserving this man's dignity while society mocked him.
She had washed his clothes, defended him against cruel reporters, and refused job offers that paid three times her salary.
Now she realized she had merely been an unsuspecting pawn inside an elaborate game of high-stakes chess.
"I want to go home," Emma whispered, her voice barely audible over the roaring fireplace.
Adrian spun around instantly, ignoring his cousin entirely to focus all his attention on her.
"Emma, please wait in the study with me," he pleaded, reaching out to grasp her shoulder.
"Do not touch me, Mr. Blackwood," she said firmly, stepping out of his reach.
The formal title sounded like a dagger slicing straight through his chest, making him flinch visibly.
"You are not a helpless patient anymore," she continued, her voice steadying as her pride took over.
"And that means my contract as your personal caregiver is officially finished as of tonight."
Vanessa let out a mocking laugh from behind them, enjoying Emma's sudden rebellion.
"Let the little charity case leave, Adrian; she was only hanging around for your will anyway."

Adrian turned on Vanessa with a fury so terrifying that the heiress swallowed her laughter and shrank back against the wall.
"If you speak another word to her, Vanessa, I will have the federal marshals waiting outside your father's penthouse tonight."
