Chapter 10 - Setting the Stage

|

An hour after the incident at the harbor, the coastal estate was transformed into a heavily fortified command center.

Six black tactical vehicles blocked the private drive, and elite private security personnel patrolled the perimeter with trained attack dogs.

Inside the grand study, Adrian paced back and forth in front of the stone fireplace like a caged panther waiting to strike.

His face was a mask of cold, lethal fury, his fists clenched so tightly that his knuckles were stark white.

When Emma had returned unharmed in the armored escort, he had pulled her into his arms so fiercely that she had lost her breath.

He had held her against his chest for five unbroken minutes, refusing to let go until he was certain she was not bleeding.

Now, his top security director, Marcus, stood before him with a high-resolution satellite map displayed on a digital tablet.

"The SUV was registered to a dummy corporation owned by Julian's primary shell company," Marcus reported with clinical precision.

"They're getting desperate, Mr. Blackwood; Julian's offshore accounts will be completely seized by federal authorities within twenty-four hours."

"He's running out of time, and he's running out of cash," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a chilling, absolute calm.

"Which means he will make his final move tonight at the Annual Blackwood Heritage Gala."

Emma looked up from the leather armchair where she sat wrapped in a warm cashmere blanket, her eyes widening in disbelief.

"You're still going to hold the gala after everything that happened this morning?" she asked, her voice filled with legitimate concern.

"Canceling the gala would signal weakness, Emma, and it would drive Julian and Vanessa deeper into hiding," Adrian explained, walking over to kneel beside her chair.

He took her cold hands into his own, looking up into her face with an expression of fierce, unwavering determination.

"The entire high society of the East Coast will be in that ballroom tonight, along with every major media network in the country."

"Julian won't be able to resist crashing the event; his pride and his greed will demand that he make one final public strike."

"What do you want me to do, Adrian?" Emma asked quietly, realizing that the final battle for their lives was already set in motion.

"I want you to stay here where twenty armed men can guarantee your absolute safety until this is finished," Adrian replied without hesitation.

Emma pulled her hands back from his grip, shaking her head with a firm, stubborn set to her jaw that surprised him.

"No," she said clearly, her voice leaving no room for argument or compromise.

"Julian tried to hunt me down in that village because he thinks I am your weak, defenseless caregiver hiding behind your money."

She stood up from the armchair, looking down at the billionaire who had spent months protecting her from the shadows.

"If we are going to finish this nightmare once and for all, Adrian, I am walking into that ballroom with you on my own two feet."

Adrian stared at her for a long, quiet moment, his initial shock slowly giving way to overwhelming admiration and deep respect.

"You really are extraordinary, Emma Vance," he whispered, a proud, dangerous smile touching the corners of his lips.

"Very well, my brave girl; tonight, we show the entire world that the Blackwood family cannot be broken."
