Chapter 13 - Blood and Steel

|
Julian shoved Emma roughly against the concrete wall, keeping the gun leveled directly at Adrian's chest as his cousin advanced.
"Stay back, Adrian! I will pull this trigger, I swear I will!" Julian shrieked, his voice echoing off the narrow concrete corridor.
"You think you're invincible because you stood up from that wheelchair, but a bullet puts everyone in the dirt just the same!"
Adrian did not stop; he took slow, deliberate strides across the damp concrete, his eyes locked entirely on the weapon in Julian's hand.
"You've been a coward your entire life, Julian," Adrian said calmly, closing the distance between them with terrifying disregard for his own safety.
"You didn't have the courage to face me like a man in the boardroom, so you tampered with my brakes on a rainy night."
"You had everything!" Julian screamed, his finger tightening visibly around the curved metal trigger of the pistol.
"Grandfather gave you the entire estate, the family name, the chairman's seat, and Vanessa's hand in marriage!"
"I was left with the scraps while you played the benevolent prince of Blackwood Tower!"
"You were left with fifty million dollars and a seat on the board, Julian, but your greed was an insatiable black hole," Adrian replied coldly.
He was only ten feet away now, his posture relaxed and balanced, every muscle coiled like a steel spring waiting to unleash violence.
Emma caught Adrian's eye for a split second, seeing the slight, deliberate flick of his gaze toward the fire extinguisher on the wall beside her.
She understood instantly what he needed her to do, gathering every ounce of courage inside her trembling body.
Julian opened his mouth to scream another desperate threat, his attention momentarily completely consumed by Adrian's steady approach.
Emma lunged forward with all her weight, slamming both hands into the heavy red metal cylinder of the wall-mounted extinguisher.
The heavy brass nozzle swung loose and struck Julian squarely in the elbow with a sickening, hollow crunch.
Julian cried out in agony as his arm went numb, his grip loosening on the weapon for a crucial fraction of a second.
Before Julian could recover his aim, Adrian closed the remaining distance with the explosive speed of an elite athlete.
Adrian's left hand clamped around the slide of the pistol, wrenching Julian's wrist downward until the bone snapped with a sharp pop.
The gun clattered harmlessly against the concrete floor and spun away into the dark shadows beneath the freight elevator.
Julian threw a desperate, clumsy left hook, but Adrian ducked effortlessly under the swing and drove his fist straight into Julian's solar plexus.
The breath exploded from Julian's lungs in a ragged gasp as he doubled over, completely paralyzed by the sheer force of the blow.
Adrian grabbed Julian by his lapels, lifting him off his feet and slamming him violently against the reinforced steel elevator doors.
"That was for the accident," Adrian whispered, his face inches from his cousin's battered, terrified expression.
He drove a second devastating right hook into Julian's jaw, sending his cousin crashing down onto the concrete floor in a limp, unconscious heap.
Heavy tactical boots pounded down the hallway as Marcus and six armed SWAT officers burst into the service corridor with assault rifles raised.
"Clear! Suspect is down!" Marcus yelled, quickly dropping to one knee to secure the unconscious Julian in heavy zip-ties.
Adrian ignored the police entirely, turning around on his heel to find Emma leaning against the wall, breathing heavily in shock.
He pulled her into his arms with desperate, overwhelming passion, burying his face in her hair as his strong body finally trembled with relief.

"You're safe," Adrian breathed against her skin, his voice cracking with raw emotion.
"I've got you, Emma; you are safe, and I will never let anyone hurt you again."
