Chapter 9 - The Shadow on the Shore

|

The morning sun broke through the coastal fog, casting a shimmering golden path across the surface of the rolling ocean.

Emma walked down the winding stone path toward the small village market at the base of the cliffs to pick up fresh bread.

Adrian had insisted on sending four armed bodyguards with her, but she had negotiated them down to two discreet guards trailing fifty yards behind.

She needed space to breathe, to sort through the overwhelming confession Adrian had laid bare on the veranda the previous night.

Her heart wanted desperately to forgive him, to throw herself into the safety of his strong arms and believe his promises.

Yet her practical, cautious mind warned her that the brutal world of the Blackwood family was built entirely on deception and danger.

As she entered the small artisan bakery, the brass bell above the door chimed merrily, filling the air with the scent of cinnamon and yeast.

Emma purchased a loaf of crusty sourdough and two almond pastries, exchanging pleasant morning greetings with the elderly baker.

When she stepped back out onto the cobblestone street, however, a prickle of cold dread settled between her shoulder blades.

Across the narrow street, a black SUV with heavily tinted windows sat idling quietly by the curb, its engine purring with suppressed power.

The vehicle had no license plates, and its sleek, aggressive profile looked entirely out of place in this quaint fishing village.

Emma quickened her pace, clutching the brown paper bakery bag tightly against her ribs as she headed back toward the cliffside path.

She glanced over her shoulder to locate the two bodyguards Adrian had assigned to her for protection.

To her horror, she saw a delivery truck intentionally backing into the alleyway, completely blocking the guards' view and path forward.

The passenger door of the black SUV clicked open, and a man wearing a dark tactical jacket stepped out onto the sidewalk.

"Miss Emma Vance?" the man asked in a low, gravelly voice, his hand resting ominously beneath his open jacket.

Emma did not hesitate for a single second; she turned on her heel and sprinted as fast as her legs could carry her toward the village square.

"Hey! Stop right there!" the man shouted, his heavy footsteps pounding against the cobblestones right behind her.

Emma reached into her coat pocket, frantically dialing the speed-dial button on her phone that Adrian had programmed that very morning.

Adrian answered on the first half of the first ring, his voice sharp and alert with immediate anxiety.

"Emma? Where are you?"

"Adrian, they're here!" she screamed into the phone, dodging around an elderly tourist couple who shrieked in surprise.

"A black SUV at the village market! They blocked your guards, and a man is chasing me toward the harbor!"

"I'm coming! Get into a crowded shop and do not let him isolate you!" Adrian roared through the speaker, the sound of a roaring car engine erupting in the background.

Emma lunged through the open doors of the harbor master's office just as the pursuer reached for the hood of her woolen coat.

She slammed the heavy oak door shut and threw the brass deadbolt into place with a desperate, breathless cry.

The heavy wood rattled violently as the man slammed his shoulder against the outside panel, but the old lock held firm.

Through the frosted glass window, Emma saw the black SUV screech away down the coastal highway as the village sirens began to wail in the distance.

She sank down against the door, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird, realizing the nightmare was far from over.
